SCHOOL NET PROGRAM

Learners in secondary and primary schools have been encouraged to use the internet to conduct meaningful research so as to gain useful knowledge that will enable them to improve their performance in national examinations.

Principal Secretary in charge of University Education and Research, Ministry of Education Amb. Simon Nabukwesi noted that digital learning and the use of the internet is an integral part in both teaching and learning therefore the need for young people to acquire digital knowledge. The PS asked teachers to also take advantage of the available facilities in their schools to sharpen their IT skills.

Amb. Nabukwesi was speaking at Friends school Kamusinga when he launched the School Net Project for Bungoma County which is part of the countrywide Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) under the National Optic Fiber Backbone (NOFBI) project being implemented by the ICT Authority (ICTA). The project is aimed at ensuring connectivity in all the 47 Counties to ease communication and improve government service delivery to the citizens.

The Chief Executive Officer ICTA Dr. Paul Rono said the project is being implemented across various public primary and secondary schools countrywide to enable learners and teachers to benefit from high-speed digital services and enhance their teaching and learning skills. He encouraged learners to desist from destructive actions and instead make use of the internet to improve their education.

The Principal Friends School Kamusinga, Philip Chirchir, said he was glad that the school is among 13 others in Bungoma County who have benefited from the project. The launch was attended by members of the school board, senior education officials from the ministry, Teachers Service Commission and Bungoma County office.
